The Zimbabwe elections took place Saturday, March 29th 2008 - coincidentally, my friend's birthday, HAPPY 21st BABES!!! - and they were relatively peaceful, with few demsonstrations and little violence. I am happy about that because I was worried about my family.
One hour, 59 minutes ago, I read on Yahoo news that the early results from the Zimbabwean election was released (thanks to Reuters). So far, it seems like the opposition to Robert Mugabe, Morgan Tsvangirai, is winning. He belongs to the Movement for Democratic Change a.k.a. MDC party. Tsvangirai has been opposed to Mugabe's rule and has been in the public eye for a while now, perhaps about 5-6 years. I can't say that I am up to date with Zimbabwean politics because I don't know what exactly the people running for president stand for, that is, Tsvangirai and Simba Makoni. All I know is that they want an end to the almost dictatorial state of Zimbabwe and hopefully that means improving the economy, creating more jobs and making way for a new and much-improved Zimbabwe...at least to the level that it was at when I first moved there in 1996.
Hopefully it all works out and someone else besides Mugabe wins. AND OF COURSE, this new leader MUST be better that Mugabe....because, you know, just because you have a new face as president, that does not automatically mean that a change is in the near future.
Anyway, here's the latest article I read:
