Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Barack Obama's former pastor, is not backing down. First, speaking at an NAACP dinner in Detroit, MI Sunday evening and today, to a group of journalists at the National Press Club in D.C., he remained unapologetic about controversial comments he made during a sermon at his Chicago church. In his speech, among other criticisms, he called the U.S. government “imperialist” and said, based on the Tuskegee Syphilis experiment, he believes the U.S. government invented HIV.
In an eloquent speech, Wright also commented on the Black Religious experience and criticized the public for misunderstanding Black Churches and the theology that comes out of the Black church tradition.
Wright says he hopes his comments spark a dialogue about race.
Do you belive this will negatively affect Obama's presidential campaign? Indeed I do. I don't think Rev. Wright is wrong in saying some of the things he's said, but I feel this was just the wrong time to bring it up again after it had simmered down a little. Now, he will be connected to Obama yet again at a moment when he needs the votes the most!
